Mission

The Jean F. Herskovits Foundation is dedicated to the education of girls and young women in northern Nigeria. It sponsors educational programs and scholarships that will help them achieve individual independence and in doing so bring about social change. The Foundation’s mission reflects the views of the late Jean Herskovits Corry, a life-long scholar and friend of Nigeria, who believed that girls’ education was a key to Nigeria’s future, and that bringing it about was the greatest and potentially most rewarding means of uplifting the nation. In service to Professor Herskovits’ vision, the JFH Foundation is committed to educate and empower girls and women in northern Nigeria who will become building blocks in making Nigeria and its institutions more functional and prosperous.

Established in 2019 at the initiative of Jean F. Herskovits Corry, JFHF is a private foundation registered as a charitable organization in New York State. The officers and board of directors select and oversee the funding of not-for-profit, non-governmental organizations in northern Nigeria that directly serve girls and young women in this region.
